Temperatures hover between 20°C and 32°C — perfect for sitting on a lakeside veranda or gliding across the water in a shikara.

That said, every season in Alleppey has its own charm. The "wrong" season for one traveller is the perfect season for another — especially if you're a photographer chasing dramatic skies, or a budget traveller who wants the backwaters without the crowds.

October to February — The Golden Season

This is when Alleppey is at its absolute finest. Post-monsoon, the backwater channels are full and fresh, the vegetation is lush and green, and the skies are brilliantly clear. Sunsets over Punnamada Lake during these months are simply unreal — the water turns a deep amber-gold that you'll be photographing non-stop.

December and January are the most popular months, with domestic and international tourists arriving in large numbers. Accommodation books out quickly, especially waterfront properties directly on the lake. If you plan to visit in this window, book your Alleppey homestay at least 3–4 weeks in advance.

November is a sleeper hit — crowds are lighter than December, weather is ideal, and prices are still reasonable. Many experienced backwater travellers consider it the true sweet spot of the year.

March to May — Hot but Quiet

Summer in Alleppey brings temperatures that can touch 38°C, with humidity making it feel warmer. The crowds thin out significantly, which means better availability at lakefront properties and more negotiating room on prices.

If you can handle the heat, mornings (5am–9am) and evenings (5pm–8pm) are genuinely beautiful. The famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place in the second Saturday of August every year — and guests staying directly on Punnamada Lake get a front-row view from across the water. If you time your trip around the boat race, the monsoon becomes your greatest asset.

Outdoor activities like kayaking and shikara rides are possible between showers. Many travellers find the monsoon version of Alleppey far more atmospheric than the crowded peak season — it just requires flexibility and the right accommodation.

When to Avoid Alleppey

There is no truly "bad" time to visit — but mid-May to mid-June can be extremely hot and humid before the rains arrive. This transitional period offers neither the coolness of winter nor the dramatic skies of the full monsoon.
