What is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race?

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race (Nehru Trophy Vallam Kali in Malayalam) is a traditional snake boat race held annually on Punnamada Lake in Alleppey, Kerala. It is one of the most famous and spectacular water festivals in India — and arguably one of the largest rowing events in Asia.

The race features "chundan vallams" — snake boats — which can be up to 40 metres (130 feet) long and are rowed by teams of 100–150 oarsmen who synchronise their strokes to a rhythm of singing and drumming. The speed, coordination, and raw spectacle of these boats at full sprint is genuinely extraordinary.

When Does the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Happen?

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held annually on the second Saturday of August. The race is typically scheduled from approximately 2:30 PM and runs until the evening. The 2026 edition falls on August 8, 2026.

The race day brings hundreds of thousands of spectators to Alleppey — it is one of the most attended sporting events in South Asia. The History Behind the Race

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes its name from India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who visited Alleppey in 1952 and was so moved by a spontaneous boat race staged in his honour that he donated his trophy — the Nehru Trophy — to be awarded to the winner each year.

Snake boat racing itself has roots going back centuries in Kerala, originally associated with local warfare and the transport of troops and supplies through the backwater network. The boats used in the race today are identical in form to the traditional war boats — each one hand-built from a single piece of anjili wood and maintained by the villages that own them across generations.

The Different Races on Race Day

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race isn't a single race — it's a full-day regatta with multiple events. Snake boats (chundan vallam) are the main and most dramatic event. Supporting races include: vepu vallam (small racing boats), iruttukuthi vallam (medium boats), churulan vallam (double-ended boats), and a women's boat race.

The women's race, introduced in recent years, has become one of the most celebrated events of the day — the level of athleticism and synchrony is stunning.

Where is the Best Place to Watch?

The official viewing galleries along the Punnamada Lake shore sell tickets and can be booked in advance. These are the closest you can get on the waterfront with an assigned seat.

Dress light — August in Kerala is monsoon season, so light, quick-drying clothes and a good rain jacket are essential. The race proceeds rain or shine.
